Smoot family papers, 1889-1984.

The collection consists of a variety of paperwork from the Brigham Smoot family. It includes: six journals kept by Brigham Smoot (1869-1946), while he was serving an LDS mission to Samoa/Tonga from 1889-1892; a holograph letter written from Abraham O. Smoot, Brigham's father, to Brigham, from September 11-15, 1891; one journal kept by Gilbert Van Schoonhaven while he was serving an LDS mission to England from 1866-1868; one holograph letter sent to Gilbert Schoonhoven from his wife, Mary Emma Greene Van Schoonhoven on 14 September 1867; the papers of Roland Nesbit Smoot, son of Brigham Smoot, relating to his service as an admiral in the Navy and his service in the Second World War; and a holograph and signed poem titled "Grandmother," by Louisa Lula Greene Richards, dated 12 March 1869, that was found inside the front cover of one of Brigham's journals. Finally, there are two 3-1/2" floppy disks with a rough draft of a transcription of the six journals kept by Brigham Smoot in Tonga. These transcriptions were made by Loretta Nixon.

Roland Nesbit Smoot was born May 7, 1901, in Provo City, Utah. He received his commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1923, and advanced to the rank of vice admiral in 1950. Abraham O. Smoot was born 17 February 1815 in Owenton, Franklin County (later Owen County), Kentucky. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1835, when twenty years old, and led a group of Saints from the south to Far West, Missouri in 1837.
